Fresh starts over 50 and 60
Frustration with stagnation? Fresh starts over 50 and over 60...
We all need a sense of a fresh start, which usually brings with it a burst of focus/energy. It's good to have the past in the past. And choose the memories you want to keep and enjoy.
I find the knack is to then continue to keep "stuff" (physical, emotional) minimal as we go into Winter from January in the UK when we're indoors more often and there are fewer daylight hours.
Carve out an hour to consider your fresh start - chill then spill...

Gardeners hands
Gardeners Hands
Written/Human authored by Anne Brookes
After an unusually hot (for Kings Norton in Birmingham, UK!) day early in May, I look down at my gardeners hands and
🟩 what do I see?
dirt under the nails, a couple of scratches on my arms - as the light of the sun going down shows the white lilac almost glowing alongside the honeysuckle reaching for the sky as it climbs the fence
🟡 and what do I hear?
short chirrups, a trio of tweets and the sweet song of a blackbird high on a chimney
🟦 and what do I feel?
the gloaming* is alive with life as May bursts in on us, full of promise and growth.
*as used by Scots: meaning twilight, dusk

PAUSE
PAUSE: do you recognise yourself?
You know something feels off, whether a remark in an office and you feel compromised, or you are so tired you have no time or space for anything you like to do...
NOW is the moment to stop, take a breath and slow it all down.
In an immediate situation, find somewhere to have space and a few minutes deep breathing, this helps your focus.
When navigating a bigger issue, the Pause can be any length of time as a whole - or give yourself blocks of time within a week. If you're very stressed, perhaps consider some proper time out, whatever options you have for that. Some find a long walk in countryside or beside a river or the sea really helps - nature calms your nervous system and can provide a reset.
We have been trained into thinking that a "holiday" will resolve this - that depends on the balancing act of organising it, paying for it, the travel demands, who you are with...will it really relax you?
Can you find a way to build reset moments every day, alongside de-stressing activities every week?
Movement releases tension, music is a powerful and pleasant, watch a film or video, see your friends, listen to a podcast, meditate, enjoy making something, spend time outside in a green space or beside flowing water, read a book, walk the dog, play with or just be with the kids, walk round a gallery or museum, visit a castle or historic site, drive or take a train or bus somewhere you've never been!
You are training your body and mind to relax and know you are taking care of you - sometimes this takes a mindshift as we may have put others' needs ahead of our own, however, if you are not functioning in a healthy and sustainanble way, you can find burnout happening without realising.
