MALCOLM – night‑time anxiety & racing thoughts

Challenge: After being mugged, Malcolm couldn't sleep. He woke up at 3am, heart pounding, feeling unsafe in his flat.

Here are the NLP techniques used:

  1. Reframing & belief change helped Malcolm challenge internal messages, eg 'I’m unsafe on my own', replacing it with 'I can be aware and grounded'.

  2. Chaining Anchors: installing a series of positive emotional anchors - 'safe asleep', 'grounded awake', 'confident walking', each triggered by a small hand gesture (you choose your own trigger), allows Malcom to begin imagining one state could naturally lead to the next.

Over two sessions (about an hour and a half in total), he practices using this, interspersed with relaxation and making his trauma memory tiny, black‑and‑white, mute.

When the 3am panic came back that week, he used the anchor and a reframing technique to 'lower the volume' on flashback imagery — his breathing slowed and heart‑rate settled.

Outcome: Within a week, Malcolm slept through the night without panic. At four months, he felt strong and contained — no longer trapped.

Anchoring, reframing and submodalities are core NLP tools that rewrite automatic responses to trauma.

NADIA – regaining confidence in public spaces

Challemge: Nina suffered a street attack after getting off a bus at midnight. She now avoids that part of her city and is particularly anxious at dusk.

Timeline Therapy is used - Nadia is guided to move mentally along her timeline and release the emotional charge attached to the event, making the visual memory fuzzy and far away. She was reconnected to positive past anchors - moments she felt safe and resourceful.

Finally, she mentally rehearsed future pacing - imagining herself confidently walking down that street as it gets dark, with the same happiness she felt stepping out after a positive event.

The coach using Time Line Therapy does not need to know the content of your thoughts as you do this - it is private in that respect.

Outcome: By session three, Nina drove through the area feeling fine. Six months later, she found herself calm whilst attending a street event with friends.

Timeline work and future pacing are structured NLP approaches designed to change emotional intensity and meaning in past/future events.
